THE HERITAGE

For over 170 years, Lawrenceburg, Indiana has been distilling, aging and blending fine whiskeys. This rich heritage exemplifies the American spirit: A passion to blaze new trails...to possess the land for the sake of freedom...and prosperity. In the mid-1800’s, this was called Manifest Destiny.

THE SPIRIT

The Transcontinental Railroad was the key to westward expansion, and the rugged opportunists who built it provided a way for countless Americans to follow. To honor the courageous spirit of those who ventured west, we proudly offer Eight & Sand Blended Bourbon Whiskey.

THE EXPRESSION

“Eight & Sand,” refers to the 8th (and fastest) setting on a locomotive’s throttle, and the sand used on the wheels to prevent slipping. So when you say, “Eight & Sand,” you’re saying, “smooth sailing.”

THE TASTE

Eight & Sand Blended Bourbon Whiskey is the newest member of MGP’s Rack House Series. It’s an ambitious combination of fine whiskies, sure to provide a smooth and satisfying experience. Spicy rye and cinnamon notes are followed by a touch of caramel at the caboose.

THE PROGRESS

Like the brave Americans who ventured west before us, we’re proud of our journey. Today, MGP produces fine spirits in Lawrenceburg, Indiana and Atchison, Kansas – the home of 8&S locomotive 811.

THE CAUSES

The history of the American railroad is the heartbeat of our brand. That’s why a portion of the profits from Eight & Sand Blended Bourbon Whiskey is dedicated to supporting railroad museums and train station restoration projects across our great land.

"SMOOTH SAILING!"

In Railroad terms, the phrase “Eight & Sand” means traveling at maximum speed (throttle setting 8) while pouring sand on the rails for traction. In other words, “Smooth Sailing!”

EIGHT&SAND COCKTAIL RECIPES

Eight & Blood & Sand

  • 1 oz. Eight & Sand
  • 0.5 oz. Cherry Herring
  • 0.5 oz. Sweet Vermouth
  • 1 oz. Orange Juice

Add 1 oz. Eight & Sand, 0.5 oz Cherry Herring, 0.5 Sweet Vermouth, and 1 oz. Orange Juice in a mixing tin over ice and shake for 45 seconds. Strain into a couple glass and garnish with a luxardo cherry.

Eight & Sand Old Fashioned

  • 2 oz. Eight & Sand
  • 2 dashes Orange Bitters
  • 0.5 oz Turbinado Syrup*
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Orange Peel

Add 2 oz. Eight & Sand, 0.5 oz Turbinado syrup, and an orange peel in mixing glass over ice and stir. Strain over 1 big cube and garnish with lemon peel.

Turbinado Syrup Recipe: 16 oz. Turbinado Sugar, 16 oz. H2O, Yields roughly 24 ounces of syrup. Add Turbinado and H2O over low heat until you have a syrup. Let cool before using. Syrup will stay good up to 4 weeks as long as its refrigerated.

Eight & Sand Sour

  • 2 oz. Eight & Sand
  • 1 oz. Strawberry-Mint Syrup*
  • 0.75 oz Lime Juice
  • Egg White Optional

Add 2 oz. Eight & Sand, 1 oz Strawberry-Mint syrup, 0.75 lemon juice, and 1 egg white in a mixing tin over ice and shake for 45 seconds. Strain into a couple glass and garnish with a mint leaf.

Strawberry-Mint Syrup Recipe: 16 oz. H20, 16 oz. Sugar, 8 oz. Strawberries. Yields roughly 24 ounces of syrup. Add sugar and H2O over low heat until you have a syrup. Bring to a simmer and add 8 oz. of Strawberries and a handful of mint leaves. Simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain and let cool before using. Syrup will stay good up to 4 weeks as long as its refrigerated.

Strawberry-Mint Highball

  • 2 oz. Eight & Sand
  • 0.75 oz. Strawberry-Mint Syrup*
  • 0.5 oz Lime Juice
  • Top with Sparkling Water

Add 2 oz. Eight & Sand, 0,75 oz Strawberry-Mint Syrup, 0.5 oz. and Lime juice to a Highball/Collins Glass. Top with sparkling water, give a quick stir, and garnish with a mint sprig.

  • 0.75 oz. Grapefruit and Ginger Syrup*
  • 0.75 oz Lime Juice
  • Top with Sparkling Water

Add 2 oz. Eight & Sand, 0,75 oz Grapefruit and Ginger Syrup, 0.5 oz. and Lime juice to a Highball/ Collins Glass. Top with sparkling water, give a quick stir, and garnish with a grapefruit peel.

Grapefruit-Ginger Syrup: 16 oz. H20, 16 oz. Sugar, 1 oz. Ground Ginger. Add H2O, sugar, and stir until you have a syrup. Add 1 oz. of ground ginger and simmer over low heat. Strain ginger and add the peels of 1 grapefruit. Let grapefruit peels infuse for at least 4 hours, but overnight is best. Syrup will stay good up to 4 weeks as long as its refrigerated.
